ANTON’S UNCLES created by Tina Kronis and Richard Alger A deconstruction of Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”
WARNING: Unconventional. Drinking. Dancing.
Only the men remain wrestling with their desires, in this fresh, funny and physical look at Anton Chekhov’s ground-breaking play.
The Los Angeles based THEATRE MOVEMENT BAZAAR explodes this classic play of lives unlived, merging the original text with new writing, movement, dancing and singing to emphasize the unspoken, unseen and unexpressed.
THEATRE MOVEMENT BAZAAR is a company dedicated to creating original performance works with an emphasis on physical action and they continue their unique remixing of literary classics with this new deconstruction of “Uncle Vanya”.
Tina Kronis and Richard Alger are the principal artists behind the Award winning company, and have collaborated together for over 10 years with Kronis winning the 2011 LA Weekly award for Best Choreography. Other productions include CHERRY JAM (2010); MODEL BEAHVIOR, I.E., THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (2008); MONSTER OF HAPPINESS (2007) and DRY CLEANING, Garland Award winner for best choreography, sound design, and video design.
“We merge elements of dance, text, cinema, and media from diverse sources into a complex performance. We investigate these elements, modifying or neutralizing them, de-contextualizing them from their sources. Liberated from their contexts, our elements are free to be structured in new and surprising ways, creating a connotative network of echoed and reverberant meanings. In this multifarious approach, we strive to reinvigorate theatre for a contemporary audience.”
“…a beautiful and exuberant riff… ‘Anton's Uncles’ have an appointment with oblivion, and they're not going to be late” (Steven Leigh Morris, LA Weekly)
